Job Responsibilities and Requirements : This position is responsible for the managing the customer service, the benefit payment process and the financial risk associated with an assigned block of long term disability. This requires applying the appropriate contractual provisions, legal guidelines; professional case management resources; and claims practices, procedures and protocols to the medical and occupational facts of each claim to decide on its acceptance, discontinuance or denial. This is accomplished by the incumbent’s determining what medical and occupational information is required to fully understand the facts of the claim, collecting it from multiple sources, e. g. claimants, employers, physicians using both written and verbal requests. The incumbent accesses the information, often in consultation with medical and vocational rehabilitation experts, to make the decision. The decision’s rationale must be communicated clearly, confidently and with sensitivity for the claimant’s circumstances. The incumbent is accountable for developing, coordinating and implementing a plan of action for each claim accepted to ensure it is managed effectively for the duration of the disability. This management accountability for LTD applies to a caseload range of 75-85 claims. Main Accountabilities In depth grasp of claim practices and limited knowledge of legal precedents. Keeps current with industry practices and evolving claim management techniques. Actions are determined by drawing upon established knowledge and skills. Situations may be complex and can vary significantly, requiring thorough analysis and critical evaluative thinking to develop innovative solutions that respond to the situation effectively. The incumbent determines the implications, requirements or consequences of implementing the solution. Communicates effectively, is able to negotiate conflict and influences others to take actions not always consistent with their initial objectives. Works under general supervision, conferring only on unusual matters. Uses time management skills to manage a block of claims and create and execute action plans. Possesses sound interview skills and is able to gather relevant information on claim through the interview process. Understands complex conditions, diagnoses and their implications. Is able to distinguish cases governed by ERISA vs. those non-ERISA cases and understands jurisdictional issues associated with non-ERISA claims. Effectively prioritizes his/her caseload in order to determine necessary activities that can impact the Group Division Business Plan. Understands the costs associated with performing activities on claims and appropriately allocates resources. Is able to think outside of the box and establish alternative payment solutions on complicated claims. Consistently communicates professionally with claimants, policyholders, sales representatives, outside vendors and internal colleagues. Has the ability to take on more complex claims, establish and follow logical action plans and manage the claims successfully. Consistently demonstrates excellent interview skills and is able to gather relevant information on claims by using effective lines of questioning and employing analytical and interpretation skills. Has the ability to properly execute complex written correspondence in a manner that meets legal guidelines and yet is understood by the recipient. Provides assistance to less experienced Benefit Analysts.
